Pfsense slow internet browsing

Wouldn't it be nice if your Internet connection was always fast and never down? Perhaps that day will come. But in the meantime, there are practical things you can do to work around a balky network and still get your day-to-day work done. Although Office is a cloud-based service, it also provides many ways to work with your content offline and to smoothly keep your changes synchronized.

Besides, it's sometimes more efficient to work with content offline just because applications run faster and the user interface is more responsive. The point is this: Office gives you the best of both worlds. Here's how to take advantage of that.

Want to see how slow or fast your network connection is? Although you don't have control over network performance itself, it helps to understand what's going on behind the scenes. The Internet is enormously complex, but there are a few concepts that can help you understand the situation much better. Following the best practices in this article can help workaround performance issues and reduce frustration.

Bandwidth and latency The two most important measures of network performance are bandwidth and latency:.

How I Maximized the Speed of My Non-Gigabit Internet Connection

Bandwidth is the rate of throughput measured in bits per second. Bigger is better. Bandwidth is like a water pipe. The larger the pipe, the more water that you can "put through" it. Latency is the time it takes for content to get from a server or service to your device and is measured in milliseconds. Faster is better.

Latency can be caused by a number of factors including low bandwidth, a sparse connection, or transmission time. Common issues Besides bandwidth and latency, other issues have an impact on network performance and are often unpredictable.

Network performance can fluctuate based on the time of the day or your physical location. The network can become clogged when certain events occur that spike the use of the Internet, such as a natural disaster or a major public event. The size and complexity of the page being loaded and the number and size of files being transferred have a direct bearing on performance.

A WiFi connection can temporarily degrade: for example, you poll a large conference meeting of thousands by requesting everyone to tweet at the same time. Considerations for a satellite network A satellite network is useful when a terrestrial network is not feasible, such as the back country, a cruise ship, or a remote scientific area.

These networks rely on satellites positioned in a geosynchronous orbit 22, miles above the equator. However, a transmission actually travels about 90, miles, and so a satellite network has a slower latency ms or more than a terrestrial network 20 to 50ms. Under the best of conditions, you may not notice this latency, but for downloading large files, streaming videos, and playing games, you probably will.

Another issue is "rain fade" in which heavy weather, such as thunderstorms and blizzards, can temporarily interrupt satellite transmission. Whenever you experience performance problems, first make sure that your device is not the root cause of the problem.

There are two things you can do that might make a big improvement:. If possible, buy more memory. Adding memory is the simplest and often most effective way to improve performance on your device.Sitting there whilst crossing your fingers, staring without the slightest blink with a nerve for anticipation, resting your hopes and dreams on that one endless loop….

I actually did this when I first got my laptop which came with Windows 10, and let me say it did have a great effect on my internet speed. You see, Windows sends your internet bandwidth to be shared with complete strangers that you have never met in your life. Basically seeding is kinda like a way to help others get their Windows updates much faster but it comes at a price of your own internet.

I am not completely sure why Microsoft does this but it could be that they want both you and I, Windows users, to get our updates faster and stay up to date to prevent all kinds of bugs and malware from infecting the computer. Click on Choose How Updates are Delivered.

So quit from all your background apps, and I can assure you, your internet will be much faster. Open Task Manager. You can also search on your computer or ask cortana on Windows Since now you have an idea or sort of which of the apps or services that takes up most of your internet, you can now get onto disabling them. The thing you have to keep note is whenever you turn it back on again and when you open your Windows Update in your settings to check for the latest updates, you will find a message saying that the updates were not installed because computer was stopped.

Chances are if you left it disabled for some time then it will take two or three times or maybe more to Check for Updates until your computer says it is up to date. Besides if one quarter of the world is using this to clean up their computers, so why not give that a try? Think of it as a conversation that your programs are having between them, and in which they send small chunks of data with each other.

So what you should do is, you are to going to want to be a dickhead and go interrupt their conversation, because with them busy talking, it takes up a lot of your internet which then leads to your slow internet on Windows You can check to see whether this has improved your internet speed by performing an internet speed test.

Sometimes whenever you upgrade to a new Windows, especially if you just upgraded to your new Windows 10, unwanted errors that has got to do with your drivers could now and then pop up.

I have included a great guide for you to follow up on this. Well, since you only have the remaining 80 percent for you to use, you can actually get back that 20 percent for you to use.

You can also search for it on your computer. Now you will find that the Group Policy window will come up, so what you have to do here is just click on Computer Configuration. This was awesome help and yes you can fix the no gpedit in home I have home googled and downloaded the files and now this thing is smoking great advice why windows would slug a system is beyond me. Thank you a million times over Jake! I ran packet captures and found that DNS replies came back very quickly, but for some reason it took over 10 seconds to load the web page.

Been fighting with this for months! Thank you sooooo much!

You made my Windows experience so much better, why Microsoft chose to use these horrible settings in the first place is beyond me. I was halfway through the guide and the download speed started to get better and better. Thank you so much.

Because for some reason, Microsoft only allows gpedit. I know. But hey, you can try downloading gpedit. Some stupid download I did, downloaded some other stupid download, that was probably a wifi controller and it hogged all the bandwitdh. Point blank. I checked for other ways to open it, cause my windows changed slightly after last update to what you described here, but I were able to work around it.

Did they remove it?I have a pretty basic config of pfSense 2. OH and let me add that there is no change if I'm connected wirelessly or directly connected to the Dlink router.

What Causes a Slow VPN? How to Solve The Issue

I am not using any authentication or any of that junk. DY is an IT service provider. Maybe the router is using a different gateway - this reminds me of the issue you get when you have a vpn and the the client uses the remote dns and not the local one. Which means you get real slow connections. Can you place the pfsense box such that it's a peer of the dlink, rather than the dlink being it's uplink?

If I remember correctly, you're working with a soho dlink of the same model I have at one of my locations, and it's I've noticed a lot of weird little issues on dlinks - settings only being saved in a particular browser, accessing certain menus causing the browser ot hang and forcing re authentication. When I attempted to put a known working router in line with it, throughput went to almost nothing.

Only reason I haven't done so at that location is that it's remote and I have to set it up for a day when I'm going to be there - it's a bonded dsl connection and it's kind of twitchy.

I just flipped the captive portal on with local auth, released and renewed my ip, logged on and did a bandwidth test. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question. Get answers from your peers along with millions of IT pros who visit Spiceworks.

Ive got pfsense but have never checked out the captive portal Thai Pepper. What feeds the Dlink? This causes immense network congestion, latency to rise above 2, ms. Very few routers provide the ability to shape a single direction of traffic in software, thus I had to find a solution that could handle bi-directional shaping over Mbps.

Once assembled, I installed PFSense 2. It easily met the requirements above, and vastly surpassed them. The biggest issue I had was the default DNS configuration.

The answer is two-fold. However, I needed to find the point that maximized the upload speed while not filling the buffers of the upstream device.

This can easily be done by hand, and takes about 5 minutes of tweaking to perform. Thus, I settled at 12, Kbps as the highest upload speed possible without any impact on my service. Untagged traffic then goes to other ethernet based devices. PFSense has great monitoring tools to measure the health and quality of a connection, but I wanted to track the speed of my connection. I built a little Node and HTML5 app called speedlogger that takes a Speedtest every 8 hours and plots it in a pretty graph.

As with any experiment, any conclusions need to be backed with data. To validate the network was performing smoothly under heavy load, I performed the following experiment:.

What have you done with your network? Requirements Thus, my router requirements were as follows: x based hardware with a TDP less than 15w. Strong support for native IPv6—many studies have shown IPv6 leads to a faster web browsing experience. Note: these are affiliate links.

The stable branch is based on Debian Squeeze, which is quite old. Sadly, their development team and pace has shrunk considerably since the initial Vyatta fork. To validate the network was performing smoothly under heavy load, I performed the following experiment: Ran a ping6 against speedtest. Turned on QoS to the above settings and repeated steps 2 and 3. The article does not cover how to install vSphere or how to configure pfSense software to do any of the many amazing things it can. A basic, working, pfSense virtual machine will exist by the end of this document. Now back to the topic.

If other VMs are already running on ESXi, then it is not likely necessary to follow the networking steps too closely. However, we recommend skimming through it to see what is suggested before building the pfSense virtual machine part.

The following steps include the necessary vSphere web client configuration required to get pfSense VM running. After getting to the pfSense setup step, switch to the guide for vSphere client below.

Before creating a new VM in vSphere web client, you will need to create two virtual switches and two port groups. From the vSphere web client navigator, click on Networking and then click on Virtual switches tab. For uplink select two separate available ports. After creating Virtual switches, click on Port groups tab. Now that the networking part is done, we continue to create a virtual machine. Modify other virtual machine settings to your liking.

For the purpose of this guide we used E adapter type. After the pfSense installer boots you will be greeted by the setup wizard. In the vSphere client the network diagram for an ESXi host may be viewed by clicking Networking on the Configuration tab:. The network diagram above shows that the Management Network was assigned to vmnic0 and it has an IP address of Others will most likely be different.

If vmnic0 is the management interface, ESXi will have automatically attached a virtual switch, vSwitch0to that interface. Of course, the virtual machine e. Click the Properties… link for vmnic This makes life a little easier when we assign virtual network interfaces to the pfSense instance. This will be the WAN interface.

HINT: If multiple physical interfaces are available in the ESXi host, it can be a bit of a struggle to work out which one has been identified as vmnic1, vmnic2 and so on. However, having that foresight is rare, so lacking that information the easiest way to match physical NICs to vmnics is to plug a PC or switch into them, one at a time.

The speed and duplex on the Networking or Network Adapters screens should change as the interface comes up. Now we need to link the second physical NIC vmnic1to a new vSwitch. Click the Add Networking link at the top right of the Networking screen and the following dialog will appear.

Click Next. In the Configuration window, I always like to take the Custom option. Now we need to decide where disk storage will be allocated to hold the configuration and operating files for the virtual machine.

This is not necessarily the same location as the file system for pfSense software, as shown later. There are two datastores on this server — a small 80GB drive on which ESXi is installed and a GB disc which is for virtual machine storage. Highlight a datastore from the list and click Next.Your browser does not seem to support JavaScript. Hi guys i just come across something today, when i use my machine hehind pfsense as gateway the internet become slow, when i run a speedtest. We have combinations of milli and Mega, bits and Bytes here. Please try to use consistent units especially when discussing bandwidth.

Do you have some connection issue? What does 'ifconfig -a' report? Supermule :. Try running a download test instead. You can download a file from a known good source directly on the pfSense box. For example:. That work well in the UK but you may want to choose some file closer to you. Though at 1Mbps you're probably fine. Jamerson :. And what vm do you have it setup on? You stated this was a VM. Workstation, Player, Esxi? How is it setup? Are they bridged or natted?I've got a PfSense proxy put in - not sure it is the best - we have 2 x WAN connections only 1 installed so far so need to do routing between them - everything to x.

I was under the impression that the hardware wouldn't need to be 'that' good - is this incorrect?? Alternatively, what would the best solution be to achieve the same result? I've had PfSense suggested a few times - I could try updating the hardware or running it via the server, but will that bring about a good improvement?

Seems a bit of an overkill for a simple proxy server??? Have you checked your resource usage while you are browsing? I did need to tweek a few things in squid to keep the performance up, cache size, log rotation cycles and a few other things. Now there is another possibility. Your firewall could be getting hammered from the outside.

It's a myth that you can take crap hardware and turn it into amazing solution in business Its a diy dream but its faulty. Do you really believe that old hardware, ram, spinning rust disk, can serve as a good cache.

The fact that it spins, is enough to discourage me from using it as such. It still needs to be configured properly. You'll definitely not get any internet speeds through that proxy box of faster than the network cards can handle.

Make sure those aren't holding you back as well. If your internet speed is decent, you should turn off any sort of squid caching. Your hard disk access speed is likely the culprit.

I didn't think Squid worked particularly well with dual-WAN setup? Thanks for your comments. We're only a small company - that's why I wanted to get away with re-using one of these s if possible and keeping one with an identical config spare, because with the age of the hardware I wouldn't be surprised if it died at some point! The intention is to have about 50 concurrent users maximum. The WAN Speed for both connections is 10 meg, but one connection is limited in it's use.

But ignoring that for now until the speed issue is fixed! I'm just downloading a 70meg file through youtube - it's capped at kb again. The CPU doesn't seem to be getting maxed out, so I'll try and disable the caching etc and see if that improves things. Will get tinkering today! Also to add that whilst downloading that 70 meg file, other browsing requests are going stupidly slowly and getting denied by proxy timeout! Have mb charter connection that never really tests out over 50 mb at the modem I run Dansguardian, Squid, Squidguard, Bandwithd, the built in RRD graphs, squid reporting; all on a Dell Optiplex with Core2 Quad.

Oh no - I just tried the same config on a much newer Optiplex Quad CPU and reloaded the config from the backup and got the same results Just disabled it and got 9. Turned the 'old' machine back on and removed the shaping on that and I'm getting about 8. So it was all my fault afterall - but a noticeable dip in performance on the older hardware still, and that's without caching enabled.

Glad to hear the issue is resolved. As for the hardware requirements, pfSense is stupidly-low.
